About the Refresher Workshop

An important part of professional development is follow up and application in the long term. This half day online refresher provides further development and support to individuals who are already familiar with the key skills and principles of motivational interviewing.

If you have previously attended training on motivational interviewing and despite your best intentions, you currently feel that your practice of motivational interviewing…

  • has slowly dropped off the agenda
  • needs some tweaking or refreshing
  • has stalled with challenges
  • is currently ad hoc

Then this half day online refresher is for you!

Please note that some knowledge and experience in motivational interviewing is required. If you are new to motivational interviewing and would like to attend, we encourage you to first attend one of our one day (and/or two day) training sessions on offer. Want to See Motivational Interviewing in Action?

This half day online refresher also provides the opportunity to observe motivational interviewing live, with the trainer role playing the key principles.

The session is informal and interactive, with participants invited to share both their difficulties and successes. The participants will work in small groups on additional case studies as a means of further developing their motivational interviewing skills.

Please note that prior to the session, all participants will be asked to reflect on, and jot down an interaction/conversation that went well and one that didn’t go so well, or that could have benefited with the use of motivational interviewing. Participants will also be encouraged to bring along their own case scenarios and/or difficult client interactions to discuss further. Potential tips and solutions will be brainstormed throughout the training session…

Learning Outcomes

This interactive half day online training, will provide you with the opportunity to:

  • reinforce the key skills and principles of motivational interviewing (MI)
  • reflect on your own current practice of motivational interviewing (both the challenges and successes in implementation)
  • reinforce the key themes and questions to facilitate change talk
  • depending on your level of MI knowledge and experience, apply the key principles at a higher level, for e.g. eliciting and reinforcing change talk, as well as practicing different ways of reflective listening
  • put motivational interviewing into practice throughout the session with various group activities and tailored case studies
  • overall strengthen your confidence, knowledge and skills in motivational interviewing

This half day online refresher includes many opportunities for reflection and review. Non-threatening group activities are incorporated throughout the session.

About Your Facilitator

Stavroula Zandes, Director

Stavroula has a background in psychology and counselling, and worked with the Cancer Council Victoria (Quit Victoria) for 20 years in tobacco control. Her roles initially included Quitline telephone counsellor, and as a Quit Educator running seminars for smokers in the workplace and community setting.

During her time at the Cancer Council, she also managed and delivered Quit’s training programs to a range of health and community professionals across Australia. As a result, Stav has trained thousands of professionals from various sectors… Her relationships with these organisations and Educators, inspired her to establish ‘Health & Wellbeing Training Consultants’ to continue to provide education and training in an area that she is deeply passionate about – people’s health and wellbeing.
