Seminars for Secondary Students

Secondary schools are in a key position to provide students with prevention based programs providing education and support to raise awareness and help young people achieve and improve their health, development and wellbeing.

Through problem solving and decision making, students are empowered to make choices that can lead them to living a more productive and fulfilling life for years to come.

We currently run the following two seminars in the secondary school setting.

Health and Wellbeing Seminar

Our health and wellbeing seminar for secondary school students runs for one hour and covers the following:

  • exploring the meaning of good health and wellbeing
  • achieving and maintaining good health and wellbeing (including nutrition, physical activity and sleeping well)
  • understanding stress and its effects, as well as learning how to manage and reduce stress in beneficial ways (including the use of mindfulness exercises)
  • a range of behaviour change strategies that are easy to use and practical to help improve students’ overall health and wellbeing

Peers and Smoking Seminar

Our peers and smoking seminar for secondary school students runs for one hour and covers the following:

  • exploring the meaning of good health and wellbeing
  • self-identity and peers
  • nicotine addiction and the tobacco industry
  • flexing your willpower muscle – how to say ‘no’
  • information and support services available
Smoking prevention programs in schools work.

In line with a systematic review published in The Cochrane Library* (Thomas et al 2013), smoking prevention programs in schools reduce uptake and significantly reduce the number of young people who will later become daily smokers.

For young people who have never smoked, these programs appear to be effective at least one year after implementation.

Our seminars incorporate group activities specific to the students’ needs and are held on the school’s premises.
