Learning Outcomes
At the end of this interactive 2 day training program, you will be able to:
- recognise the current tobacco climate and the important role you play (including the increase in use of vaping devices amongst young people)
- understand addiction and identify the client’s smoking and/or vaping behaviour
- assess the client’s readiness to quit/cut down/manage their smoking and/or vaping through the transtheoretical model of behaviour change
- engage clients in the smoking cessation conversation in 3 – 5 minutes as part of routine care
- explore and resolve a client’s ambivalence through motivational interviewing (a detailed exploration to help increase your skills and confidence)
- recognise the challenges of quitting (such as weight gain, stress and upsetting emotions, caffeine and alcohol and their impact on behaviour)
- understand the interactions between mental health and medications, and evidence-based recommendations to support clients moving forward
- implement relapse management and prevention in all client discussions
- focus on a client’s values and commitment to act through mindfulness, including easy to use behaviour change strategies to support change
- identify the various quitting medications available and recommend their proper usage
- understand the safety, effectiveness and current recommendations surrounding electronic cigarettes/vaping devices
- highlight the support services available to clients for further help

Our 2 day training program will provide you with comprehensive information to support your efforts with clients, through the use of motivational interviewing and mindfulness, helping you to support and encourage your clients to commit to action, i.e. to make positive changes to their current smoking and/or vaping behaviour.
We also explore addiction and the challenges of quitting in greater detail, and will offer you practical tips and suggestions to support your clients, including working with complex clients (who have a mental health condition). The evidence-based use of medications and electronic cigarettes, as well as relapse prevention is furthermore discussed in greater detail in our 2 day program.
We provide many opportunities for reflection and review, with non-threatening group activities incorporated throughout the two days to facilitate and support your learning.
