Are you feeling comfortable right now? Is your life repetitive, familiar and full of routine?
When was the last time you did something out of the ordinary?
Have you ever wanted to try something different, but never had the courage to do so?
It is well established that when we step outside our comfort zones, our confidence improves and so does our overall wellbeing.
With the experience however, comes some risk and anxiety. This is common when we are trying something foreign and new. But if you are prepared to have a go, you will also feel a sense of pride and accomplishment.
If you are feeling comfortable right now and want to try something new, it doesn’t have to mean bungee jumping, or sky diving. It could be simply stretching yourself through trying new foods, saying hello to a stranger, travelling alone, or learning to dance.
If you are not sure whether you’re ready to step outside your comfort zone, these 5 tips may give you the inspiration you need to take the first step:
1. Don’t worry what other people will think
Go out and try it anyway! Let people live their lives and allow yourself to live yours…
Steve Jobs says it well, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.” Focus on what makes you happy and go out and live life to the fullest.
2. Don’t be afraid to fail
If you fail, make mistakes or look silly in the process, does it really matter?
Did you have fun? Did you stretch yourself? Did you feel a sense of accomplishment?
Even if you didn’t enjoy the activity as you thought you would, don’t you feel great for having tried it in the first place? What matters is that you tried…
Some things will turn out and some things will not. You will never know if you don’t try. Don’t live with regret or wonder what your “life would be like if only you had the courage back then.”
If it works out well, it’s a bonus for you. If not, learn from it and move on.
Life is too short to be wondering about what the outcome might be. Acceptance is the key.
4. Magic happens when you move outside your comfort zone
It’s impossible to achieve something new if you don’t step outside your comfort zone.
Magic, triumph, success requires effort and action in unknown territory.
Taking action = results. So think about what you would like to do, take a deep breath and take the first step today.
5. Make a habit out of it
Bring some fun and excitement into your life and try something new regularly, once a week if you can, or at least once a month.
Michael Jordan sums it up nicely, “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.”
Are you prepared to feel a little unease…
So you can experience life much more fully? If yes, what will you try?
Start small, watch your confidence grow and build from there.
For me, I am prepared to feel a little anxiety so I can expand my horizons. After attending a painting class on my own, I felt very empowered. But it’s not only a painting class that I’ve tried, but also archery, a hot yoga class, African/middle-eastern drumming, drawing, floral arranging, and a dancing class.
I’ve also visited new places, such as galleries/festivals/theatre shows (all on my own!) to help stretch myself.
I share this to encourage you. It doesn’t need to be fancy, but could be as simple as dining in a new café on your own, or trying yoga for the first time. The sense of achievement is worth it!
